Fertility Enhancement
How do you determine if it’s possible to enhance fertility?
First an interview is conducted in order to review medical history and to assist in determining the best approach to enhancing fertility. Laboratory testing is often ordered to assess hormonal levels (adrenal, thyroid and sex hormones). At the time of the interview a review of appropriate homeopathic and herbal medicines is made and often the patient is able to begin a natural therapy protocol while waiting for test results that may have been ordered.
What are FSH and LH and why are they important?
The human menstrual cycle results from complex interactions between the hypothalamus, pituitary and ovaries.
FHS is the abbreviation for Follicle Stimulating Hormone; LH is the abbreviation for Luteinizing Hormone. These hormone levels, the timing of their release, and the ratio of one to another are some of the major determining factor for conception and the ability to carry to full term.
We use laboratory testing to determine the timing and level of both FSH and LH, as well as the responsiveness of the ovaries to these hormones.
Other than herbal medicine what other remedies could be considered to improve fertility?
Bio-identical natural hormones are always a possibility. Also nutritional supplements such as whole food vitamin E (containing all the co-factors) are an excellent source of sex hormone precursors. For example if a women is lacking in sex hormone precursors this vitamin E can be an excellent choice to help improve fertility.

In brief the FSH is the hormone that promotes the maturation of the ovary, the timing and level of FSH output is important for optimal estrogen production. As Luteinizing Hormone levels rise its peak signals the end of the follicular phase and precedes ovulation by 16 to 18 hours. A sufficient quantity of LH is required for the early maintenance of the corpus luteum, and the pituitary supplies it for about ten days.
